Emergency Orthodontic Care in Beaverton, OR
While true orthodontic emergencies are rare, we know that broken appliances or unexpected discomfort can be stressful. At Ensley Orthodontics, we are committed to providing you with the guidance and care you need to stay comfortable and keep your treatment on track.
Handling Common Issues at Home
Most minor orthodontic problems can be temporarily solved at home until you can visit our Beaverton office. We recommend trying these simple remedies first to alleviate discomfort and prevent further irritation.
General Soreness
It is normal for teeth to feel tender for a few days after getting braces or having an adjustment. To ease this soreness, stick to a soft diet and take an over-the-counter pain reliever like Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Chewing sugarless gum can also help increase blood flow and reduce discomfort.
Irritated Cheeks or Lips
As your mouth adjusts to new brackets, you may develop sore spots. Dry the irritating bracket with a tissue and apply a small piece of orthodontic wax to create a smooth barrier. Rinsing with warm salt water can also soothe irritated tissues and promote healing.
Poking Wires
If a wire comes loose and pokes your cheek, try pushing it back into place with a clean pencil eraser or a Q-tip. If that doesn’t work, you can cover the end with wax or clip the wire carefully using sterilized fingernail clippers.
Loose Brackets or Bands
If a bracket or band comes loose but is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax if needed for comfort. If it comes off completely, place it in a ziplock bag and bring it to your next appointment.
When to Call the Office
If you are in severe pain or have a problem you cannot handle on your own, please contact us immediately. We will schedule an emergency appointment to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Even for minor breakages that aren’t painful, please call us during business hours so we can determine if we need to see you sooner than your next scheduled visit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as a true orthodontic emergency?
A true emergency involves severe pain, significant injury to the mouth or face, or an infection (swelling of the gums or face). If you experience trauma to the mouth, seek immediate medical or dental attention.
Can I eat if a bracket is loose?
Yes, but be very careful. Stick to soft foods and avoid chewing on the side of the mouth where the bracket is loose to prevent further damage or accidental swallowing.
My aligner is cracked. What should I do?
If the crack is minor, you can often keep wearing the aligner until your next switch. If it is broken in half or uncomfortable to wear, switch to your previous aligner or the next one in the series and call our office for guidance.
