Early and Adolescent Orthodontic Treatment
Why is early orthodontic care important?
Remember recess? For a child who has noticeably unusual teeth, the teasing can be pretty hard to handle, so it’s important to take social as well as medical factors into consideration when determining the best timing for treatment. The standard age to begin treatment is between 10 and 12, but our philosophy is to check early and often (about once every year or so) and then treat patients if and when it's appropriate.
Aside from its aesthetic benefits, pediatric orthodontics can straighten teeth, guide erupting teeth into position, correct bite problems, and even prevent the need for tooth extractions. Pediatric treatment has a positive effect on your child’s overall dental health because straight teeth are easier to keep clean and less susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease.
What is early orthodontic treatment like?
Orthodontic appliances work in different ways to benefit your child's dental health. Some are fixed (such as expansion appliances or space maintainers); others are removable (such as retainers). Dr. Ensley will explain which appliance is best for your child, what the treatment can do, and how long it will take.
