Who needs orthodontia?
There is no cut-and-dry answer to this question because orthodontics are different for each individual. People from children to retirees can benefit from the healthy smile that comes with braces and working with an orthodontist. Braces can be important not only to a great smile and improved self-confidence but to better dental health as well. Teeth in correct alignment are easier to clean, which can make them more resistant to decay and less susceptible to gum disease. Proper alignment may also prevent tooth and jaw discomfort that can come from uneven wear. By choosing to wear braces, patients take a positive step in improving their overall health and comfort. Your initial complimentary consultation will determine your need.

How do I know if my child is in need of orthodontic treatment?
It's often tough to tell if someone needs orthodontic treatment, especially if front teeth are reasonably straight. At the same time, many problems that look as though they might require orthodontia actually resolve themselves without treatment. That's why we're here! Coming in for your initial complimentary consultation to find out if braces are in your or your child's future.

How do braces work?
All orthodontic corrective appliances have one aim: to use gentle pressure to move teeth into proper alignment. Most orthodontic appliances are made of stainless steel or clear, ceramic materials. Individual brackets are attached to each tooth, and orthodontic wires connect all the brackets together and provide the force to move teeth. If the part about delivering pressure on your teeth has you worried, then you can relax. Keeping you comfortable is one of our highest priorities at Ensley Orthodontics, which is one reason we use the latest developments in orthodontic appliances.

Will permanent teeth need to be removed?
In the past, it was almost a rule that teeth were removed during the course of orthodontic treatment. However, we're happy to report that times have changed! Today, with the advances in technology and the judicious use of early treatment, more than 90 percent of patients have no need for extraction of permanent teeth for successful orthodontic treatment.

How long will treatment take?
Treatment usually lasts between 18 months and 30 months, but it depends on the severity of the situation and level of patient cooperation. We work to keep your timeline as short as possible, but we also want you to have long-lasting results.

Are retainers necessary? If so, how long will I have to wear one?
A retainer is a device worn full- or part-time after braces have been removed. The retainer is designed to prevent your teeth from drifting or moving while the bone around your teeth hardens and stabilizes. The longer you wear your retainer, the better your chances that your teeth will not relapse. Retainers provide assurance that your teeth will stay in perfect alignment while your jaw continues to grow or develop.
